Chapter 14

When I finally headed in, a fire had been built up, giving the room a warm, cheerful glow. Ava and Madge had their own glow going, as they’d managed to scrounge a pair of wine bottles out of a cupboard and were well into the first by the time I stepped in.

“Grab a cup,” Madge said, indicating a plastic cup waiting for me, “and you better hurry before Ava finishes the rest.”

“Oh, hush,” Ava said with a little laugh, swatting her friend. I was relieved to see her in better spirits as I grabbed a cup and poured myself some red wine.

Poking my head over the bubbling stew, I gave it a sniff, stomach rumbling, but I could see the thick chunks of potatoes were still too firm yet.

“It will be another thirty minutes or so till it’s ready,” Ava said, handing me a package of Hawaiian buns. “Here Madge found these. Will they tide you over?”

“The boy needs meat and protein now,” Madge said when I slipped beside her on the small couch. “Isn’t that right?”

“The buns will hold me over,” I said, taking the package gratefully and digging into the sweet, soft rolls.

“I’ve been thinking about that message we heard, and I’m not sure we can put our trust in it completely,” Ava said, settling back in her chair and sipping her wine. From the droop of her eyelids, it was obvious the alcohol was starting to affect her. “Colorado is a big state and a long way away. I don’t know if we should leave the area and everything we know on that message alone.”

“What other options do we have?” I asked. “I don’t like it any more than you, but it’s the only lead we have to go on. We can wait here for a few more days, I guess… see if we learn anything else or see something interesting happening around Portland. PDX is nearby.”

“Drink up, CT. Ava and I aren’t going to be the only ones with a hangover tomorrow.” Ava shot Madge a warning look, obviously wanting to object to her underage son drinking but realizing how ridiculous that would be given our situation. Madge went right on as if she didn’t notice Ava’s glare.

“What do we know so far?” She ticked things off on her long, slender fingers. “One, the world is basically kaput, or at least North America is, and we have to assume Asia, Europe, South America, Africa… So basically, the entire world. Second.”—she held up a second finger—“the bombs that were dropped emitted a gas that… changed everyone into some kind of rabid monsters. Except”—her eyes locked on Ava with a sparkle of amusement as my stepmom buried her face in her cup—“for those of us lucky enough to be imprinted by a newly formed Alpha. Which leads us to one of our biggest questions. Why is CT different from all the other men in the city? Are there others like him, or us, who survived the apocalypse
